Richard Wright was American author of novels, short stories, essays, and non-fiction. He is best known for his novel Black Boy and his autobiography, also titled Black Boy.

Wright was born in Mississippi in 1908 and spent his childhood in the Jim Crow South. He left school at the age of fifteen and moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked a series of odd jobs. In 1925, Wright moved to Chicago, where he joined the Communist Party and worked as a journalist for the party’s newspaper, The Daily Worker.

Wright’s first novel, Lawd Today, was publish in 1932. His 2nd novel, Native Son, was publish in 1940 and was an instant best-seller. Native Son is the story of Bigger Thomas, a young black man who commits a crime in a white neighborhood and is caught up in the resulting media frenzy. Wright’s other novels include The Outsider (1953) and The Long Dream (1958). Richard autobiography, Black Boy, was publish in 1945.
